Lewis Smith Lake is officially recognized as an Alabama Premier Lake by the Alabama Legislature.

Lewis Smith Lake is the deepest reservoir in Alabama with a maximum depth of 264 feet at Lewis Smith Dam and approximately 642 miles of shoreline.

The lake generates approximately 200,000 angler-hours of fishing annually, producing over $3 million in angler expenditures for surrounding counties and communities.

Lewis Smith Dam is one of the largest earth and rock-filled dams in the eastern United States, standing 300 feet tall and 2,200 feet long at the top, with a spillway rated as Alabama's top rainbow trout fishing spot.

The Lewis Smith Lake watershed encompasses the 180,000-acre Bankhead National Forest, home to the Sipsey Wilderness Area with more than 380 miles of rivers and streams.
