• Mourns the death of Justice "Jay" D. Smyth, III, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, who died on February 10, 2017, at age 62.

• Justice Smyth was born in Verdun, France, on January 18, 1955, and earned undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Alabama before practicing law in Montgomery for 19 years and later relocating to Tuscaloosa.

• He was respected by the Bench and Bar throughout Alabama and was preceded in death by his mother Margaret "Peggy" Smyth and sister-in-law Teresa "Sissy" Smyth.

• Survivors include his wife of nearly 34 years, Rushan Goodson Smyth; two sons; his father; three brothers; and numerous extended family members.

• The Alabama Legislature expresses gratitude for his abundant life and offers the resolution in tribute to his inspiring legacy and in sympathy to his family and friends.
