University of Alabama at Birmingham employees who are active contributing members of the Teachers' Retirement System may purchase up to two years of service credit for time served as postdoctoral research fellows at the university.

Service certification must conform to applicable administrative rules and procedures of the Teachers' Retirement System, and members must remit required contributions to receive credit.

Members cannot receive credit for service already credited in the Teachers' Retirement System or other public retirement plans, except the federal Social Security program.

Eligible members must pay the full actuarially-determined cost for each year of claimed service to the system's secretary-treasurer within one year from October 1, 2021.

The act becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
