University of Alabama at Birmingham employees who are active and contributing members of the Teachers' Retirement System may purchase credit for up to two years of service as a postdoctoral research fellow.

Prior service certification must conform to applicable administrative rules and procedures of the Teachers' Retirement System, with credit received upon payment of required contributions.

Members cannot receive credit for any service already credited in the Teachers' Retirement System or another public retirement plan, except the federal Social Security program.

Eligible members must pay the secretary-treasurer the full cost per year of claimed service as determined by the system's actuary, with payment due within one year from October 1, 2021.

The act becomes effective on the first day of the third month following its passage and approval by the Governor.
