HJR 244 Summary

• Creates the Alabama Commission on Child Protection to review state laws and procedures regarding child safety in electronic communications and Internet use.

• Commission membership includes 18 members comprising legislative leaders, state agency directors, pediatrician, child psychologist, educators, Internet service provider representative, mobile phone manufacturer representative, and civil liberties organization representative.

• Commission shall conduct comprehensive review of state laws related to child pornography, human trafficking, prostitution solicitation, and obscene material; recommend legislative improvements and innovative technologies for child protection.

• Appointments must be made within 30 days of enactment; first meeting required by August 1, 2018; commission shall submit written findings and recommendations to Legislature by fifth legislative day of 2019 Regular Session, then dissolve.

• Commission members serve without compensation but may be reimbursed for necessary meeting expenses; House and Senate shall provide necessary staff and support.
