Recognizes Deputy Niko Vasilakis of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department as a nominee for the 2018 Alabama Legislative Medal of Honor for Law Enforcement, Alabama's highest law enforcement award for extraordinary courage in the line of duty.

Deputy Vasilakis responded to a multiple car accident involving one burning vehicle in the roadway and two cars that plunged into a flowing creek, extinguishing the fire with citizen assistance and calling for emergency services.

While awaiting backup, Deputy Vasilakis crawled onto the submerged vehicles to assess the situation and assist victims, helping one person to the creek's edge before Fire and Rescue personnel arrived to form a human ladder for complete rescue.

Deputy Vasilakis performed his duties without regard to personal safety, demonstrating immense courage, diligence, and quick response that prevented a life-threatening situation from escalating further.

The Legislature directs that Deputy Vasilakis receive a copy of this resolution as evidence of commendation; adopted by the House on 06-MAR-18 and the Senate on 13-MAR-18.
