HJR29 Summary

• Creates the Alabama Study Commission for Gynecologic Cancers to study prevalence, early diagnosis methods, unmet patient needs, and recommend legislation and support programs.

• Commission membership includes 16-17 members: representatives from the Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition and Statewide Cancer Registry, the Insurance Commissioner, plus appointees by the President Pro Tempore (3), Speaker of the House (3), and Governor (7) including cancer survivors, medical specialists, caregivers, researchers, and advocacy group representatives.

• Appointments must be made within 30 days of the act's effective date, with the first meeting held by July 1, 2018, designated by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate.

• Commission shall submit written findings and recommendations to legislative and executive leadership no later than March 5, 2019, at which time it shall be dissolved.

• Members serve without compensation but may be reimbursed for necessary meeting expenses; the Legislature shall provide staff and support to the commission.
