Officer Joshua Garlen and Officer Joshua Collins of the Madison Police Department are nominated for the 2018 Alabama Legislative Medal of Honor for Law Enforcement, Alabama's highest law enforcement award for extraordinary courage in the line of duty.

On October 1, 2017, Officer Collins responded to a domestic violence call and found the victim in distress; the offender had stolen her money and truck and fled in the vehicle.

Officer Garlen, arriving in the area, drew his service weapon and fired four times through his windshield and into the truck's rear window to defend himself from violent assault and prevent further injury to himself and others.

Rather than request medical attention for themselves after being injured, both officers prioritized ensuring that area residents were not injured during the pursuit or from the gunfire before reporting their own injuries.

The House of Representatives recognizes and honors both officers as nominees for the 2018 Legislative Medal of Honor for Law Enforcement and directs each receive a copy of the resolution.
