SB125 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code sections 32-1-1.1 and 32-5A-89 to regulate following distances between motor vehicles and define truck platoons.

• Adds new definition of "truck platoon" as a group of individual commercial trucks traveling at electronically coordinated speeds and following distances closer than would be reasonable without electronic coordination.

• Exempts trailing trucks in a truck platoon from following-distance violations if the platoon is engaged in electronic brake coordination and meets Department of Transportation requirements.

• Allows the Department of Transportation to adopt rules implementing truck platooning technology for both commercial deployment and research purposes.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
