SB167 Summary

• Prohibits the Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency from suspending a driver's license solely due to failure to pay fines, penalties, fees, or court costs related to traffic violations.

• Exception: License suspension remains permitted for violations specified in subsections (j) and (k) of Section 32-5A-195, including mandatory revocation offenses (DUI convictions, manslaughter by vehicle, fleeing police, etc.).

• Applies to both traffic violation convictions and failure to appear on traffic violation charges.

• Changes references throughout Section 32-5A-195 from "Director of Public Safety" to "Secretary of the Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency."

• Effective date: First day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor, or when otherwise becoming law.
