SB268 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code Section 32-9-20 to modify vehicle length and weight restrictions for certain motor vehicles operating on Alabama highways.

• Increases maximum length for stinger-steered type truck tractor-semitrailer combinations from 75 feet to 80 feet and adjusts load extension limits from 3-4 feet in front and 4-6 feet in rear.

• Allows vehicles equipped with EPA-certified natural gas engines or EPA-approved conversion units for compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas to exceed standard weight limits up to a maximum of 82,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, accounting for the difference between natural gas and comparable diesel fuel tank systems.

• Permits vehicles using auxiliary power units or idle reduction technology to receive an additional 400-pound weight allowance upon providing written proof of the equipment's weight and functionality.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
