SB269 Summary

• Amends Section 16-40A-2 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to revise sex education content, course materials, and instruction in Alabama public K-12 schools.

• Requires all sex education programs to emphasize abstinence from sexual intercourse as the only completely effective protection against unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV.

• Mandates that course materials establish abstinence outside of lawful marriage as the expected social standard for unmarried school-age persons.

• Requires instruction to be age-appropriate and medically accurate, including statistics on contraception reliability, information on sexual abuse laws and reporting, methods to resist peer pressure, and comprehensive parenting skills instruction.

• Removes language classifying homosexuality as unacceptable to the general public and as a criminal offense, and renumbers remaining instructional requirements accordingly.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
