SB 27 Summary

• Amends Section 13A-11-61.2 of Alabama Code to exempt qualified retired law enforcement officers from firearm possession prohibitions in designated locations including law enforcement stations, jails, mental health facilities, courthouses, and athletic facilities.

• Qualifies retired officers as those meeting the federal Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act of 2004 definition, requiring honorable retirement with 10 or more years of service and meeting active officer firearm qualification standards.

• Maintains existing prohibitions for all other persons carrying firearms in secured facilities with continuous guard posting and security features including magnetometers, key cards, and biometric screening devices.

• Violation of firearm possession restrictions remains a Class C misdemeanor.

• Effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
