SB280 Summary

• Requires all county superintendents of education to be appointed by the county board of education, except where otherwise provided by the Alabama Constitution of 1901.

• Applies to county superintendents upon expiration of their term or upon vacancy occurring after January 1, 2021.

• Allows county boards to continue currently elected superintendents as appointed superintendents for an additional term without following standard posting and selection procedures under Section 16-9-11, Code of Alabama 1975.

• Requires county boards to notify elected superintendents by March 1 of the final year of their term whether the board intends to contract with them for an additional term.

• Takes effect immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
