SB59 Summary

• Amends Section 11-91A-2 of the Alabama Code to authorize the Care Assurance System for the Aging and Homebound and its affiliated local centers to participate in the Local Government Health Insurance Program.

• Adds the Care Assurance System for the Aging and Homebound and its affiliated local centers to the list of entities eligible to participate in the program subject to board acceptance.

• Participants must pass a resolution conforming to board rules to have their elected officials, full-time employees, and retired employees become eligible for health care coverage.

• Employers can only withdraw from the program by board-certified resolution with six months' notice, and remain liable for unpaid claims and interest at 1.5% monthly on amounts over 30 days past due.

• Takes effect immediately upon passage and gubernatorial approval or upon becoming law.
