SJR11 Summary

• Creates the Code of Ethics Clarification and Reform Commission to study and recommend reforms to Alabama's Code of Ethics, which has been amended at least 25 times since its enactment over 40 years ago.

• Commission comprises 24 members including 3 Senate members, 3 House members, the Attorney General and Ethics Commission Executive Director (serving as co-chairs), judges, district attorneys, attorneys, and representatives from county commissions, municipalities, press associations, and association executives.

• Appointing powers must coordinate to ensure commission membership reflects the state's racial, gender, geographic, urban, rural, and economic diversity.

• Commission shall report findings and recommendations to the Legislature by the first legislative day of the 2019 Regular Session, at which time it shall be dissolved.

• Members may be reimbursed for meeting-related expenses by their respective appointing authorities; the Alabama Law Institute shall provide professional services to support the commission's work.
