Recognizes the Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA) on its 50th anniversary of serving Alabama and educating students with distinction.

ASFA began as an after-school program funded by Governor Lurleen Wallace in 1967-1968 and was established as a full-time school in 1972 through legislation championed by Representative J.T. "Jabo" Waggoner.

ASFA serves talented students in grades 7-12 across Alabama in six disciplines: Creative Writing, Dance, Mathematics, Science, Music, Theatre Arts, and Visual Arts, while providing core academic courses for high school diplomas.

The 2017 graduating class of 70 seniors earned an average ACT score of 26.8, received $13 million in merit scholarships averaging $200,000 each, and were accepted to 124 colleges, universities, art schools, and conservatories.

Alumni have achieved global recognition including Emmy Awards, authored bestselling books like The Hunger Games trilogy, worked as NASA engineers, and founded successful businesses and nonprofits.
