Retired certified firefighters diagnosed with occupational disease cancer (brain, skin, digestive, hematological, or genitourinary system) within 10 years of retirement receive reimbursement for out-of-pocket medical expenses not covered by health insurance or Medicare.

Eligible retired firefighters must have obtained certification through the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission, completed at least three years of service, and left employment according to employer rules.

Employers bear all costs for reimbursement and are not required to reimburse for experimental treatments or out-of-network care unless requested by the firefighter's physician and approved by the insurance provider.

Employers are not required to provide reimbursement if the cancer was caused by means other than the firefighter's occupation.

The act becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
