• Retired military veterans from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard (including reserve and National Guard components) may obtain pistol permits without paying a fee in Alabama.

• Veterans must present a United States government-issued Veteran Identification Card or DD-214 Proof of Military Service form plus sufficient proof of military retiree status to the county sheriff.

• Renewed pistol permits for eligible veterans remain free as long as they continue to meet the conditions for renewal.

• County sheriffs may revoke a veteran's pistol permit if the veteran is suspected of, charged with, or convicted of a felony involving moral turpitude, domestic violence in the first degree, or domestic violence in the second degree.

• A revoked veteran must return their permit within 30 days of written notification by registered mail; failure to return it while continuing to carry a handgun constitutes carrying a weapon without a license or carrying a concealed weapon.
