• Amends Section 15-18-8 of the Alabama Code to allow judges to split sentences for misdemeanor convictions, permitting partial suspension of the sentence with probation for up to two years.

• Authorizes judges to impose sentences on misdemeanors and municipal ordinances in accordance with Section 13A-5-7, with discretion to suspend a portion and place defendants on probation.

• Maintains existing provisions for felony sentencing while adding new flexibility for misdemeanor cases where judges determine the ends of justice and public interest are served.

• Became effective immediately following passage and Governor approval on May 28, 2019.
