SB1 Summary

• Amends Section 32-5A-350 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to prohibit drivers from physically holding or supporting a wireless telecommunications device or stand-alone electronic device while operating a motor vehicle on public roads, streets, or highways.

• Expands existing texting-while-driving law to include prohibitions on holding any wireless device or stand-alone electronic device, watching videos, and recording or broadcasting videos while driving.

• Establishes penalties of $50 for a first violation, $100 for a second violation, and $150 for a third or subsequent violation (increased from previous $25, $50, and $75 amounts).

• Provides exceptions for emergency calls, parked vehicles, pre-programmed GPS navigation, and public safety first responders performing official duties; allows hands-free voice communication and earpieces.

• Becomes effective October 1, 2019.
