SB 140 Summary

• Amends Section 16-40A-2 of the Alabama Code to revise sex education curriculum requirements in public K-12 schools.

• Requires that abstinence from sexual intercourse be emphasized as the only completely effective protection against unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV.

• Mandates that abstinence outside of lawful marriage be presented as the expected social standard for unmarried school-age persons.

• Requires course materials to be age-appropriate and medically accurate, including emphasis on self-control, ethical conduct, contraception reliability statistics, financial/legal responsibilities, sexual abuse laws, and peer pressure resistance.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
