SB165 Summary: Alabama Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Patient Safety Act

• Creates the Alabama Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Board to regulate and license limited X-ray machine operators, magnetic resonance technologists, nuclear medicine technologists, radiation therapists, radiographers, and radiologist assistants.

• Establishes licensing requirements effective January 1, 2021, requiring medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals to obtain board licensure; existing practitioners without certification may continue practicing if they register by January 1, 2021 and obtain full licensure by January 1, 2025.

• Board consists of 9 members appointed by the Governor: one representative from each licensed profession, two licensed practitioners (one radiologist and one non-radiologist), one public member, and one full-time educator in an accredited program.

• Authorizes the board to establish scope of practice standards, continuing education requirements, examination standards, and disciplinary actions including fines, suspension, and revocation for violations or unlicensed practice.

• Violations constitute a Class C misdemeanor with each offense treated as a separate violation; board subject to Alabama Sunset Law with termination date of October 1, 2024, renewable every four years thereafter.
