AL SB222

Requires all county superintendents of education to be appointed by the county board of education, except as provided by the Alabama Constitution of 1901.

Applies to vacancies occurring after January 1, 2023, and upon expiration of terms for elected superintendents.

Allows county boards to continue employing elected superintendents as appointed superintendents for additional terms without following standard posting and selection procedures under Code of Alabama 1975, Section 16-9-11.

Requires county boards to notify elected superintendents by September 1, 2019 (for those with terms ending in 2020) or September 1, 2021 (for those with terms ending in 2022) of intent to contract for an additional term.

Becomes effective immediately upon passage and gubernatorial approval.
