SB270 Summary

• Creates a constitutional amendment for Etowah County requiring all allowances received by the Sheriff for feeding prisoners be deposited into a separate "Sheriff's Discretionary Fund" in the county treasury.

• Fund shall be used primarily for feeding prisoners in the county jail, with any excess available for law enforcement purposes, school resource officers, and sheriff's office operations.

• Allows unspent funds to carry over year to year, and if additional feeding funds are needed, the sheriff must pay from other unrestricted appropriated funds.

• Exempts the sheriff from competitive bid law requirements when purchasing food or supplies for prisoner feeding.

• Election on the proposed amendment scheduled for the primary election in 2020 in accordance with Alabama election laws.
