SB272 Summary

• Prohibits Alabama state agencies, political subdivisions, and instrumentalities from awarding grants to pay direct or indirect costs of performing, inducing, referring, or counseling in favor of convenience abortions.

• Bans grants to any individual or entity that performs, induces, provides referrals for, or counsels in favor of convenience abortions, as well as affiliates of such entities.

• Defines "convenience abortion" as terminating a pregnancy, excluding procedures to save the mother's life, preserve the unborn child's health, remove miscarried children, remove ectopic pregnancies, or abort pregnancies from rape or incest.

• Exempts hospitals, medical schools, and two-year and four-year colleges and universities from funding denials under this act and does not affect Alabama Medicaid program funding.

• Takes effect immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
