SB330 Summary

• Establishes the Alabama Alzheimer's and Dementia Education, Care and Training Act, authorizing the Department of Public Health to develop educational programs and services for individuals with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or related diseases, their families, and the general public.

• Authorizes the Department of Public Health to provide instructors who train and support family members, health care providers, and other caregivers in home and residential care settings for affected individuals.

• Directs instructors to provide technical assistance and training intended to encourage long-term home-based care and reduce health care costs to the state, families, and health care facilities.

• Authorizes the Legislature to appropriate funding for the program and permits the Department to accept gifts, grants, and donations; allows assessment of reasonable fees from service recipients based on ability to pay.

• Repeals Sections 22-50-70 through 22-50-74 of the Alabama Code, transferring dementia education and training responsibilities from the Department of Mental Health to the Department of Public Health; effective October 1, 2019.
