SB406 Summary

• Amends Section 32-9-29 of the Alabama Code to authorize the Department of Transportation to issue annual commercial wrecker emergency tow permits for vehicles exceeding standard weight, width, length, or height limits.

• Establishes permitting framework allowing the director to set limits for combinations of commercial wreckers towing disabled or abandoned vehicles that exceed maximum height, weight, or length restrictions established by law.

• Authorizes the director to establish a permitting method and fee structure for commercial wrecker permits and allows exceptions or waivers under emergency, exigent, or extraordinary conditions.

• Prohibits permits from being issued to persons or entities currently prohibited from operating by federal or state vehicle safety agencies.

• Permits issued under this section are in addition to existing registration requirements under Alabama Code Title 32, Chapter 6 and Title 40, Chapter 12; effective the first day of the third month following passage and approval.
