SB60 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code Sections 32-5A-181, 32-5A-182, and 32-5A-183 to establish reduced speed school zones for every school in a county or municipality, including schools along state-maintained roads or highways.

• Defines a school zone as all public or private school property, including school grounds and any road or highway abutting the school grounds extending 300 feet along the road or highway from the school grounds.

• Requires appropriate warning signs to be erected at an appropriate distance before a reduced speed school zone, with signs at the end designating where motor vehicles may resume regular speed limits, in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

• Assigns responsibility for sign placement and maintenance: county commissions maintain signs on county-maintained roads, municipalities maintain signs on municipality-maintained roads, and the State Department of Transportation maintains signs on state-maintained roads or highways.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor; passed by the Senate with 34 yes votes and 0 no votes on April 9, 2019.
