• Amends Section 34-23-8 of the Alabama Code to require electronic prescriptions to specify whether generic drug products may be dispensed.

• Applies the generic substitution instruction requirement to oral and electronic prescriptions, extending existing rules that already apply to written prescriptions.

• Requires pharmacists to note the practitioner's instructions regarding generic substitution on the file copy of the prescription and retain it as specified by law.

• Violations of the prescription requirements are subject to a fine of up to $1,000.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
