HB124 Summary

• Prohibits use of automated traffic enforcement systems by the state, counties, municipalities, and other political subdivisions to enforce traffic laws.

• Defines "automated traffic enforcement system" as any camera system designed to record traffic violations, including red light and speeding cameras that capture vehicle license plates.

• Repeals all existing local laws authorizing automated traffic enforcement, affecting nine municipalities: Selma, Midfield, Opelika, Bessemer, Center Point, Brantley, Montgomery, Phenix City, and Tuscaloosa.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
