HB 198 Summary

• Expands the definition of podiatry practice in Alabama Code Section 34-24-230 to include treatment of disorders of both the foot and ankle, previously limited to the foot only.

• Adds a detailed definition of "foot and ankle" specifying anatomical boundaries: the foot includes 28 bones divided into forefoot, midfoot, and hindfoot structures; the ankle includes the ankle joint and surrounding soft tissue structures.

• Requires podiatric physicians who surgically treat ankle ailments to complete at least 24 months of surgical residency approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education of the American Podiatric Medical Association.

• Permits podiatric physicians to prescribe drugs specifically related to their expanded scope of practice and to perform toe and foot/ankle amputations, but prohibits leg amputation or surgery above the ankle joint.

• Takes effect on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
