HB270 Summary

• Amends Code of Alabama Section 16-6B-2 to require each public school senior to legibly print and sign his or her own name in cursive writing as a graduation requirement.

• Maintains existing requirement that cursive writing instruction be taught in elementary schools, with students able to create readable cursive documents by end of third grade.

• Requires local boards of education to certify annually to the State Board of Education that applicable schools are meeting the cursive writing requirements.

• Authorizes the State Board of Education to adopt rules to implement and enforce the cursive writing certification requirements.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
