HB280 Summary

• Reopens the State Police Tier II Plan to any employee of the Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency who is certified by the Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission and performs law enforcement duties.

• Allows Tier II plan members employed as state policemen to retire after 25 years of creditable service and includes one year of hazardous duty time credit for every five years of service as a state policeman.

• Clarifies that employees of the Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency who are certified by the Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission are considered state policemen for retirement purposes under the Employees' Retirement System.

• Modifies Tier II benefit calculations for state policemen to equal 2.375% of average final compensation multiplied by years of creditable service, capped at 80% of average final compensation.

• Effective date is the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
