HB33 Summary

• Increases survivor compensation for dependents of Alabama national guardsmen killed or dying on state active duty from $10,000 to $100,000.

• Expands education benefits to children of national guardsmen killed or dying on state active duty to include tuition reimbursement at Alabama state institutions for up to 45 months.

• Removes the 30-day minimum duty requirement, allowing national guardsmen on shorter state active duty periods (such as for natural disasters or emergencies) to qualify for state and federal survivor and education benefits.

• Extends federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) and Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act protections to national guardsmen on state active duty regardless of duration.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
