HB454 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code Section 45-37-232.40 to authorize the Sheriff of Jefferson County to employ a confidential secretary for both the Birmingham Division and the Bessemer Division.

• Confidential secretaries receive compensation equal to Jefferson County Commission confidential secretaries and are exempt from county merit system requirements.

• Former county merit system employees hired as confidential secretaries may return to equal or higher merit system positions upon termination, with service time counting toward merit system benefits and longevity pay.

• Confidential secretaries may join any applicable Jefferson County pension plan if application is made within 30 days of employment.

• Prohibits confidential secretaries from running for elected county office while employed in that position.

• Effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
