HB82 Summary

• Prohibits Alabama postsecondary institutions and athletic associations (including NCAA) from preventing student athletes from earning compensation for the use of their name, image, or likeness.

• Allows student athletes to obtain professional representation (athlete agents and attorneys) for contracts and legal matters without institutional or athletic association interference.

• Requires each postsecondary institution with an athletic program to establish an athlete injury and wage fund, funded by 15% of ticket sales revenue from athletic events, divided equally between injury compensation and equal wage distribution to all student-athletes.

• Prevents institutions and athletic associations from providing compensation to prospective student athletes based on name, image, or likeness, and prohibits scholarship revocation for athletes exercising these rights.

• Becomes effective January 1, 2023.
