SB106 Summary

• Amends Section 16-6F-5 of the Alabama School Choice and Student Opportunity Act to authorize charter schools located on or within one mile of military installations with a mission focused on serving military dependents and Department of Defense civilian employees.

• Military-focused charter schools may prioritize enrollment of dependent students whose parents are permanently assigned to the military installation, with random selection if enrollment exceeds facility capacity.

• Once total enrollment reaches 400 students, all additional admitted students must be dependents of military members or DoD civilian employees permanently assigned to that military installation.

• Maintains existing charter school enrollment provisions including credit transferability between charter and traditional public schools, annual capacity determination by school governing boards, and student information record requirements using the Alabama Student Information System (ASIM).

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
