SB2 Summary

• Amends Sections 12-9A-7 and 12-9A-8 of the Alabama Code to repeal the prohibition preventing the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from assigning circuit or district judges from Jefferson County to serve in other judicial circuits.

• Repeals the prohibition preventing the presiding judge of Jefferson County from assigning circuit or district court judges within the county to serve within the circuit or district courts.

• Allows the Chief Justice to assign judges to address court congestion, court delay, civil and criminal case backlogs, or other reasons necessary for prompt administration of justice, with judges reimbursed for travel and maintenance expenses.

• Authorizes the presiding circuit judge to assign judges within the circuit or district courts after evaluating circuit needs, with assignments provided in writing and filed with the Administrative Director of Courts.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
