SB71 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code Sections 32-5A-181, 32-5A-182, and 32-5A-183 to expand reduced speed school zones to apply to every school in a county or municipality, including those along state-maintained roads or highways.

• Defines a school zone as all public or private school property, including school grounds and any road or highway abutting the school grounds extending 300 feet along the road or highway from the school grounds.

• Requires warning signs to be erected at an appropriate distance before a reduced speed school zone and designating signs at the zone's end, in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

• Assigns signage placement and maintenance responsibilities to county commissions for county-maintained roads, municipalities for municipality-maintained roads, and the State Department of Transportation for state-maintained roads.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor, or its otherwise becoming law.
