SB 82 Summary

• Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission must provide a stand-alone crisis intervention training (CIT) program to all law enforcement trainees by January 1, 2021.

• Law enforcement officers already certified before January 1, 2021 must complete the CIT program by January 1, 2023.

• Commission shall collaborate with National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Alabama to develop the program using NAMI's existing program standards.

• Training must be provided at no cost to law enforcement agencies.

• Commission shall conduct annual reviews and updates to the training to reflect changes and trends in crisis intervention.
