SB93 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code sections governing the Alabama Board of Athletic Trainers to update definitions, licensing requirements, and regulatory procedures for athletic trainers.

• Expands the definition of "athletic injury" to include conditions that would benefit from athletic training services as deemed by a physician, and clarifies athletic training practice to include care for physically active individuals beyond just athletes.

• Increases daily compensation for Board of Athletic Trainers members from $50 to $100 per day and establishes an Advisory Council composed of three physicians and three athletic trainers to recommend model practice protocols subject to approval by both the State Board of Medical Examiners and the Board of Athletic Trainers.

• Modifies licensure requirements to allow individuals legally present in the United States with appropriate federal documentation to become licensed athletic trainers, and clarifies that athletic trainers are qualified health care professionals functioning under physician supervision.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
