HB 115 Summary

• Designates the third Saturday in June of each year as Juneteenth National Freedom Day to commemorate the abolition of slavery throughout the United States and its territories in 1865.

• Requires the Governor to issue an annual proclamation honoring Juneteenth and recognizing the important contributions African-Americans have made to Alabama's communities, culture, and economy.

• Authorizes the Governor to take additional actions necessary to promote and encourage observance of Juneteenth.

• Permits public schools to offer instruction and programs regarding Juneteenth.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
