HB13 Summary

• Amends Section 13A-5-13 of the Alabama Code to include crimes motivated by a victim's employment as a law enforcement officer within the existing hate crime statute.

• Establishes enhanced criminal penalties for felonies and misdemeanors committed against law enforcement officers when motivation by their employment status is proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

• Sets mandatory minimum sentences: Class A felonies (15 years), Class B felonies (10 years), Class C felonies (2 years), Class D felonies (18 months), and misdemeanors (3 months minimum as Class A misdemeanor).

• Allows previously convicted felons receiving enhanced sentences under this section to also face additional punishment under the Alabama Habitual Felony Offender Act.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
