HB18 Summary

• Creates a new state crime of tampering with any consumer product, including food and drugs, or tampering with product labeling or containers.

• Establishes three felony levels: Class C felony for basic tampering or conspiracy to tamper; Class A felony if tampering causes serious physical injury or death; Class B felony if tampering is intended to injure a person's business.

• Defines key terms including "consumer product" (articles customarily produced for consumption or personal use), "bodily injury" (cuts, bruises, pain, illness, functional impairment), and "serious bodily injury" (substantial risk of death, extreme pain, protracted disfigurement or functional impairment).

• Takes effect on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
