HB280 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code Sections 32-5A-181, 32-5A-182, and 32-5A-183 to expand reduced speed school zones to apply to every public and private school in the state, not just those outside municipal corporate limits.

• Defines a school zone as all public or private school property, including school grounds and any road or highway abutting the school grounds extending 300 feet along the road or highway from the school grounds.

• Establishes responsibility for placing and maintaining school zone signs: county commissions maintain signs on county roads, municipalities maintain signs on municipality-maintained roads, and the State Department of Transportation maintains signs on state-maintained roads.

• Requires appropriate warning signs at a distance before reduced speed school zones and end-of-zone signs indicating where regular speed limits resume, with all signage in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
