AL HB355

Creates the crime of making a false statement to a law enforcement officer, prohibiting persons from knowingly making materially false statements during criminal investigations of Class A or B felonies.

Establishes three prohibited actions: falsifying or concealing material facts, making materially false statements or representations, or using false documents containing false information to law enforcement officers.

Classifies violation as a Class C felony with an exception exempting persons who provide false denials of guilt in response to officer questioning.

Requires law enforcement officers to provide a specific warning before interviewing or requesting statements, informing subjects that false statements during felony investigations are subject to criminal prosecution.

Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
