HB380 Summary

• Proposes an amendment to Amendment 693 of the Alabama Constitution to prohibit the Sheriff of Macon County from participating in the county's supernumerary program effective December 13, 2000.

• Allows the Sheriff of Macon County to participate in the Employees' Retirement System of Alabama on the same terms as other employees and to purchase service credit for prior service as sheriff.

• Sheriffs holding office on or before the ratification date must forgo assumption of a supernumerary office and make their retirement election within one year after ratification.

• Maintains existing rights for those already entitled to participate in a supernumerary program prior to the amendment's ratification.

• Requires a statewide election on the proposed amendment conducted in accordance with Section 284.01 of the Alabama Constitution and state election laws.
