HB382 Summary

• Expands the scope of athletic trainers to treat athletic injuries sustained by physically active individuals, not limited to athletes, and includes injuries that physicians deem would benefit from athletic training services.

• Establishes a formal professional relationship between athletic trainers and supervising or referring physicians, requiring written protocols approved by the State Board of Medical Examiners that specify conditions requiring physician referral.

• Creates an Advisory Council consisting of three physicians and three athletic trainers to recommend model practice protocols, establish physician-to-trainer ratios, and advise on supervision standards, subject to approval by both the State Board of Medical Examiners and the Alabama Board of Athletic Trainers.

• Increases board member compensation from $50 to $100 per day and provides advisory council members $100 per diem plus travel and subsistence reimbursement.

• Effective the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
