HB383 Summary

• Terminates use of Common Core Standards (Alabama College- and Career-Ready Standards) in K-12 public schools effective immediately.

• Requires State Board of Education to replace Common Core Standards with pre-2011/2012 Math and English Language Arts standards for the 2021-2022 school year, known as Transition Standards.

• Directs State Board of Education to revise Transition Standards into new "Alabama Ahead Standards" based on top-performing state standards, to be implemented starting 2022-2023 school year.

• Creates Alabama Excellence Standards Commission comprised of curriculum experts to provide consulting services and produce a report on the new standards at least 30 days before State Board adoption.

• Prohibits adoption of any national standards (including Next Generation Science Standards, History Standards, Social Studies Standards, or Sexuality Standards) that would cede control of Alabama educational standards, and prevents state education entities from joining consortiums that would limit state control.
